The fifth meeting of the Korea-Australia Free Trade Agreement (KAFTA) Joint Committee was convened virtually on 5 April 2022.

On 18 March, Australia and the Republic of Korea (ROK) held the second Australia-ROK Senior Officials’ Policy Dialogue on our engagement with Southeast Asia and ASEAN.

Australia and the Republic of Korea enjoy a deep and historic relationship, and we mark our 60 years of diplomatic relations by celebrating the enduring friendship of our peoples and the bond between our nations. The strength of our bilateral partnership is underpinned by shared liberal democratic values, common strategic interests, strong economic ties, and extensive community links.

Australia and the Republic of Korea will work together to drive increased adoption of low and zero emissions technologies through a new Australia-Republic of Korea Low and Zero Emissions Technology Partnership.

On 13 September 2021, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, Chung Eui-yong, and the Minister of National Defense of the Republic of Korea, Suh Wook, hosted the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, and the Australian Minister for Defence, the Hon Peter Dutton MP, in Seoul for the fifth Foreign and Defence.

On 21 July, Australia and the Republic of Korea held the seventh Australia-ROK Joint Economic Committee meeting via videolink. This was the first such meeting since both sides agreed to re-energise the forum at the 2019 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministers Meeting.

The fourth meeting of the Korea-Australia Free Trade Agreement (KAFTA) Joint Committee took place virtually on 9 December 2020.

We therefore welcome the work of the review committees with their mandates from member states and looks forward to their recommendations to the World Health Assembly in May which we need to be ambitious, grounded in robust evidence, and with clear prioritised areas for action.
