Australia and France share an enduring partnership forged through a century of common purpose and sacrifice.

This roadmap establishes a new and ambitious chapter in our bilateral relationship.

For over thirty years, our three countries have been signatories to the Joint Statement on Disaster Relief Cooperation in the South Pacific, which established the FRANZ (France, Australia, New Zealand) trilateral cooperation arrangement for humanitarian assistance in the Pacific in the event of humanitarian emergencies.

The second Australia-France Foreign and Defence Ministerial Consultations reflected the shared commitment to restore a dynamic bilateral relationship founded on trust and shared interests, in line with the priorities agreed by the President of the French Republic and the Australian Prime Minister.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, the Hon Richard Marles MP, and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon Penny Wong, will travel to France and the United Kingdom.

Minister for Trade and Tourism, Senator the Hon Don Farrell met with Mr Olivier Becht, the French Minister-Delegate in charge of Foreign Trade, Economic Attractiveness and French Nationals Abroad, to advance the Australia – France economic, trade and investment relationship.

France, Australia and New Zealand reiterate their solidarity with the Kingdom of Tonga, which have been hit hard following the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano on 15 January 2022.

At the inaugural Australia-France Foreign and Defence (2+2) Ministerial Consultations, Ministers reflected on the strength of our strategic partnership, in promoting an open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region and a rules-based international order that underpins long-term security and prosperity.
