Australia's statements at the UNGA Third Committee – 77th session.

In accordance with regulation 6 of the Autonomous Sanctions Regulations 2011 (the Regulations), the Minister for Foreign Affairs (the Minister) has designated for targeted financial sanctions and declared for travel bans (together 'listed'), by legislative instrument (Autonomous Sanctions (Designated Persons and Entities and Declared Persons – Iran) Amendment (No. 3) Instrument 2024).

Australia has imposed targeted financial sanctions and travel bans on three Russian citizens for their involvement in the Evil Corp cybercrime group.

In accordance with regulation 6A(2) of the Autonomous Sanctions Regulations 2011 (the Regulations), the Minister for Foreign Affairs (the Minister) has designated for targeted financial sanctions and declared for travel bans (together 'listed'), by legislative instrument (Autonomous Sanctions (Designated Persons and Entities and Declared Persons – Thematic Sanctions) Amendment (No. 5) Instrument 2024).

The undersigned members of the Media Freedom Coalition note with deep concern the trial of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in Russia.

The women and girls of Afghanistan deserve nothing less than the full enjoyment of their human rights. Afghan women themselves have shown courageous leadership in calling for accountability.

Australia was pleased to join the US and a range of international partners in endorsing this statement on 25 September 2024 in New York.

Statement by the Joint Investigation Team Member states.

We strongly support the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights’ language and framing of civil and political rights. Unfortunately, this amendment misrepresents the intent of the Covenant regarding the right to the freedom of expression, which is why we have voted against the amendment. 

We strongly support the resolution, which recognises the importance of fair, periodic, inclusive, and genuine elections, and the role of the UN in assisting Member States to arrange them.
