Australia-UK FTA Chapter 1 Initial Provisions and General Definitions

Australia and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (“the United Kingdom”), hereinafter each individually referred to as a “Party” or collectively as the “Parties”,

Australia today signed a landmark free trade agreement with the United Kingdom that will make Australian exports to the UK cheaper, create new opportunities for workers, young people and businesses and further strengthen the special relationship between our two countries.

Australian exporters are looking to target new markets, including the US, the UK, India and Indonesia – where Australia already has, or is working towards, free trade agreements, according to Australia’s 2021 International Business Survey published today.

Australia has ratified the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP), ensuring that our farmers and businesses are able to access the benefits of what will be the world’s the largest free trade agreement.

Ministers and Senior Officials, representing Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Viet Nam met virtually on the occasion of the fifth meeting of the CPTPP Commission, hosted by Japan on September 1, 2021.We are pleased with the solid progress that has been made since the Agreement entered into force in 2018 and reaffirm the significant contribution of the Agreement to the global economy as well as the importance of further collaboration, as highlighted in the following areas:

The Customs Amendment (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement Implementation) Bill 2021 amends the Customs Act 1901 to implement the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement—RCEP.
