Australia is committed to advancing gender equality and the rights of the girl child.

We support the Chair of this committee communicating the outcomes of today’s discussion, to the chair of Fifth Committee at the earliest opportunity, for their timely consideration.

Human rights are the foundation of freedom, justice and peace globally, and inextricably linked to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals set in the Agenda 2030.

Addressing human rights situations or – as some call it – “naming and shaming” is not about politicisation – it is about upholding the Council’s very mandate.

We are committed to protecting the rights of all people to adopt, manifest, change or leave any religion or belief without experiencing hatred, discrimination or violence.

Despite positive efforts to include women with disabilities in the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, women and girls with disabilities have not been systematically involved.

In many parts of the world, LGBTQIA+ communities still experience high levels of discrimination, stigma and exclusion, which can lead to unjust criminalisation, sexual and gender-based violence, higher risks of mental illness, and poorer development and economic outcomes.

We deplore Russia’s forcible transfer and deportation of thousands of Ukrainian children. It has torn families apart and we join all those calling for the safe return of Ukraine’s abducted children.

Australia has consistently voiced its deep concerns about Russia’s crackdown on opposition voices, civil society, human rights defenders and independent journalists.

Humanitarian needs are at their highest since the start of the conflict and meanwhile, grave violations and abuses of international human rights law and violations of international humanitarian law persist across Syria with impunity.
