Deepening the Australia–Africa connection

Nine journalists from eight African countries arrived in Perth in September for an international media visit to learn about Australia and its relationship with the region.

Beginning with the Africa Down Under Conference, which continues to be a focal point in Australia-Africa relations, the journalists mingled with Australian mining magnates, high-level investors and diverse African delegations. They took part in the press conference with Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and met with the Australian High Commissioners to Africa.

'The conference and press conference put everything into perspective. I believe I now have a better understanding of trade and bilateral relations between African states and Australia,' remarked Faith Zaba, Political Editor at the Zimbabwe Independent.

'For the first time I am actually aware of the extent of Australia's involvement in Africa. I had no idea prior to this visit,' said Estelle de Bruyn, Editor of Namibia's Die Republikein, following a tour of the Doherty Institute, Australia's world class medical research centre leading the fight against Ebola, HIV/AIDs and Tuberculosis–all infectious diseases of particular concern in Africa.

'I didn't expect the discussions to have been such a great source of news' said Faith following an afternoon with Australia Awards students in Sydney. Discussions between journalists and the students continued to broaden understanding of Australia's relationship with Africa.

At the end of the visit the journalists left with new friends, professional connections, and the knowledge that Australia has, and will continue to have, a broad and multifaceted engagement with the African continent.
