The Elizabeth O'Neill Journalism Award commemorates the distinguished career of Elizabeth O'Neill OAM who died in service of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Indonesia on 7 March 2007.
The Elizabeth O'Neill Journalism Award is awarded to one journalist from Indonesia and one from Australia each year. The Award is open to high-achieving journalists from print, radio, television and online media organisations.
The 2014-15 awardees are Ms Latika Bourke (Australia) and Mr Aiman Witjaksono (Indonesia).
Aiman's program focused on a broad range of issues shared by contemporary Indonesia and Australia. These included trade and foreign policy on security, law enforcement and education. Aiman also spent time with the Australian Federal Police, Border Force and staff from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Reflecting the scope of Aiman's program, he met representatives from across the spectrum of the Australian Government and private sector; attending one-on-one meetings with the Minister for Trade, Andrew Robb, Minster for Justice, Michael Keenan and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop. Meetings were also held with Victoria Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade, Minister Dalidakis, as well as CEOs of Australian business such as Woolmark Australia.
Elizabeth O'Neill programs are developed to build a stronger understanding and appreciation of the connection between Australia and Indonesia and are coordinated by the Australia-Indonesia Institute and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, supported by the Australian Embassy in Jakarta.
