Beyond Veiled Cliches: The Lives of Arab Women (C413)
Priority area: Media
Country location: United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Lebanon, Australia, Qatar, Palestinian Territories
Grantee: Amal Mahmud Awad
Project Description
Ms Awad will travel to the Middle East to explore the similarities and differences experienced by women in both Australia and the Arab world in their daily lives – work, relationships, home and family life, friendships, the communities they live in, and more. The interviews, and the author's own life, will inform a book, due for publication in 2017, Beyond Veiled Cliches: The Lives of Arab Women.
This exploration delves into the lives of Arab women in Australia and the Arab world from the Arab perspective. It will address contemporary issues and connect lives in both worlds, and query the impact navigating two cultures has on Arab women in Australia, more specifically those who were born or spent their formative years here. This book, as well as articles and photography in support of the journey, will offer a refreshing and much-needed consideration of how Arab women live - demystifying, normalising and celebrating diversity.
