On Thursday 10 December 2009 in Honiara, the Solomon Islands Deputy Prime Minister Fred Fono launched the Solomon Islands Family Health and Safety Study: A Study on Violence Against Women and Children.
This is the first comprehensive, nation-wide study on violence against women and children that has been conducted in Solomon Islands. The research used World Health Organisation methodology, which is leading international practice for this type of study.
The study provides a strong evidence base to inform future activities in Solomon Islands to respond to violence against women. The report includes a comprehensive set of recommendations aimed at preventing violence against women; supporting women living with violence; and strengthening the health sector and legal response to this issue.
The study was conducted by the Solomon Islands Ministry of Women, Youth and Children Affairs with the National Statistics Office.
The research was undertaken with the support of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, and funding from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and AusAID.
The Australian Government is committed to reducing violence against women in Australia, as well as contributing to international efforts to end violence against women globally and in our region.
