22 February 2016 - 18 March 2016

The 'Raoul Wallenberg - to me there's no other choice' travelling exhibition was opened by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms Julie Bishop MP, on the 25 February in Canberra. The exhibition is co-hosted by the Swedish Institute and the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra with the support of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

2016 marks the 71st anniversary of the disappearance of Raoul Wallenberg, a young Swedish diplomat and humanitarian who led a daring rescue operation to save nearly 100,000 Jews in Nazi-occupied Hungary in 1944 by issuing protective passports and providing shelter in diplomatic buildings.

Many individuals whose lives were saved by Mr Wallenberg later resettled in Australia. For his heroism, Mr Wallenberg was the first person to be made an Honorary Citizen of Australia. Australia Post honoured him with an Australia Post stamp in 2015.

This exhibition is a tribute to Wallenberg's extraordinary efforts in the face of adversity. As well as highlighting Wallenberg's legacy, the exhibition is designed to inspire thoughtful reflection and provoke questions around personal courage, tolerance and human rights.

The 'Raoul Wallenberg - to me there's no other choice' will be on display in the main foyer of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade until 24 March 2016. The exhibition is open to the public between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm weekdays.

School groups are welcome. School group bookings are essential. Please contact the Department on (02) 6261 1530 for booking information.
