AusAID congratulates Vice-President of Indonesia and AusAID scholarship recipient, Dr Boediono, who has been presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Economics degree by the University of Western Australia (UWA).
With the support of two Australian Government scholarships, Dr Boediono graduated from UWA with a Bachelor of Economics in 1967, followed by a masters degree from Monash University in 1972.
Dr Boediono has since become one of Indonesia's best-known economists. He has served as Governor of the Bank of Indonesia, Finance Minister, and as the State Minister of National Planning and Development.
As Dr Boediono's achievements demonstrate, education is a strong investment in accomplishing a nation's development outcomes. Australia has provided more than 100,000 scholarships across the globe since the early 1950s.
Today AusAID provides short and long-term study and professional development scholarships through the Australia Awards initiative.
These awards provide opportunities for study in a range of disciplines and are intended to build developing countries' own capacity to progress towards the Millennium Development Goals.
Australia Awards delivered by AusAID will increase from around 2000 last year to around 3800 annually by 2014.
Online applications for the 2012 intake of development awards are now open.
