Shared bilateral and regional priorities feature at Senior Officials Meeting between Timor-Leste and Australia

Officials from Timor-Leste and Australia met in Dili today for their annual Senior Officials Meeting.

The meeting, hosted by Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MNEC) took stock of what had been a meaningful past year centred on the 20th anniversary of the Popular Consultation and INTERFET. Officials welcomed the increase in bilateral visits and exchange that had enabled regular high-level dialogue between leaders.

Officials exchanged views on strategic and economic developments in the Indo-Pacific and the implications for both countries. They agreed to enhance cooperation and explore opportunities to work together in regional and international forums.

Australia confirmed its ongoing support for Timor-Leste. Officials welcomed the refresh of their long-standing bilateral development cooperation, consistent with Timor-Leste’s country-owned and country-led approach. Australia reiterated its commitment to being a best practice development partner and to aligning its investments with Timor-Leste’s priorities, such as economic development, labour mobility, social capital and transformative infrastructure.

In line with the outcome of the meeting between Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak and Prime Minister Scott Morrison in Dili on 30 August 2019, officials discussed ways to boost bilateral maritime security cooperation and the good progress made in supporting Timor-Leste’s maritime infrastructure development at Port Hera naval base.

Both sides welcomed the entry into force of the Maritime Boundary Treaty and reaffirmed their commitment to the timely development of Greater Sunrise.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will host the next Senior Officials Meeting in Australia in 2021.
