Media release from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

D21

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has reviewed its travel
advice for Sri Lanka issued on 16 February 1995 and advises that there
has been a recent resumption of hostilities, particularly in the
northern and eastern provinces of the country. A state of emergency is
in force in these provinces, and travel there should be avoided.

The state of emergency is also in force in the greater Colombo
district. Road blocks and other government security measures are likely
to be encountered and should be treated with appropriate caution.

Australians are advised to exercise due care when travelling in Sri
Lanka and to register their presence with the Australian High
Commission, 3 Cambridge Place, Colombo 7 (Telephone 698767) which is
able to provide advice on current developments.
