MEDIA RELEASE

The Government of Australia expresses its deepest sadness for
those killed by the Sunday 25 January terrorist attack on the Sri
Dalada Maligawa.
Australia offers its heartfelt condolences to the people of Sri
Lanka, especially to the families of those who died in the
attack.
The Australian Government deplores and condemns all acts of
terrorism. During a visit to Sri Lanka in July 1997, the Foreign
Minister, Mr Alexander Downer, unequivocally condemned acts of
violence against innocent civilians as completely unacceptable.
He expressed the hope of the Australian Government that there
would be an early, peaceful negotiated settlement to the conflict in
Sri Lanka - a solution which takes into account the legitimate
aspirations of all communities.
