Today marks nine years since the Myanmar military launched targeted attacks against Rohingya communities in Rakhine State, causing mass displacement, widespread human rights violations and abuses, and enduring suffering. More than 1.2 million Rohingyas are now displaced in Bangladesh, and we recognise the generosity of the Government of Bangladesh in continuing to host them. Hundreds of thousands more remain displaced across the region and within Myanmar.

Rohingyas are entitled to the full enjoyment of their human rights, including the right to equal access to public services. We acknowledge their unwavering resilience in the face of persecution. We welcome the cooperation of the Bangladesh Government to ensure the safety, security and access to adequate and dignified housing for displaced Rohingyas in Bangladesh. We will continue to work with Rohingyas, the international community and Bangladesh stakeholders to improve livelihoods and increase self-reliance.

Australia remains deeply concerned by reports of violence against civilians and humanitarian personnel, forced recruitment, restrictions on humanitarian access and discrimination against ethnic and other minorities in Myanmar. Australia continues to support international efforts to pursue accountability for grave human rights violations in Myanmar and abuses committed against Rohingyas and other communities.

We are deeply concerned about recent reports that 530 people were lost at sea after departing Myanmar. UNHCR reports that 2025 was the deadliest year on record for maritime movements by Rohingyas, a trend that is continuing in 2026.

We want to see conditions put in place which would allow Rohingyas to return to their homes voluntarily, safely, sustainably and with dignity. These conditions can only be created by addressing the root causes of their displacement. Australia strongly supports ASEAN’s efforts to resolve the crisis in Myanmar and urges the full implementation of ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus. We call for the immediate cessation of violence, the release of those unjustly detained, safe and unhindered humanitarian access, and inclusive dialogue with all stakeholders.
