The Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism leads the Counter Terrorism Branch. As part of the International Security Division, the Counter-Terrorism Branch advances Australia's interests in countering terrorism and violent extremism through:
- Supporting efforts towards a comprehensive policy approach to combating terrorism internationally, including by recommending to Ministers priorities for international counter-terrorism engagement
- Build and maintain international links by leading negotiations on counter-terrorism cooperation and holding regular consultations with partner countries
- Support and coordinate capacity-building initiatives by Australian agencies
- Support and develop international initiatives that build resilience against violent extremist groups and build social cohesion
- Coordinate efforts to ensure Australia's effective implementation of its obligations under United Nations counter-terrorism instruments
- Manage the listing of individuals and organisations under Australia's counter-terrorism sanctions framework
