Australia-Indonesia Treaty on Common Security

TREATY BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT OF AUSTRALIA AND THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA ON COMMON SECURITY THE GOVERNMENT OF AUSTRALIA and THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA (hereafter referred to as the "Parties"),

DESIRING to strengthen the friendship, trust, mutual respect and unbreakable bond between them as neighbours and partners;

RECOGNISING their common commitment to the peace and stability of the region, which can only be secured through collective responsibility;

RECOGNISING that both Parties benefit from the other's stability, resilience and sense of security;

DESIRING to contribute to regional security and stability in order to ensure circumstances in which their aspirations can be best realised for the economic development and prosperity of their own countries and the region;

REAFFIRMING their commitment, as reflected in the 2006 Agreement between Australia and the Republic of Indonesia on the Framework for Security Cooperation, ("Lombok Treaty"), to the sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity of all countries, and to the principles of good neighbourliness and non-interference in the internal affairs of each other, consistent with the Charter of the United Nations and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia;

REAFFIRMING their commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law, including the Charter of the United Nations and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea;

EMPHASISING the importance of dialogue and transparent, predictable and responsible conduct to reduce the risk of misunderstanding and miscalculation and prevent conflict;

REAFFIRMING their commitment to ASEAN centrality and the rules-based regional architecture that upholds international law;

MINDFUL of the contribution that would be made to their own security and that of the region by cooperating in the development of effective national capabilities in the defence field and hence their national resilience and self-reliance;

WELCOMING the strength of the defence partnership, reflected in the 2024 Agreement between the Government of Australia and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia on Cooperation in the Field of Defence;

THEREFORE agree as follows:

ARTICLE 1

The Parties undertake to consult at Leader and Ministerial level on a regular basis about matters affecting their common security and to develop such cooperation as would benefit their own security and that of the region.

ARTICLE 2

The Parties undertake to consult each other in the case of adverse challenges to either Party or to their common security interests and, if appropriate, consider measures which might be taken either individually or jointly and in accordance with the processes of each Party.

ARTICLE 3

The Parties agree to promote – in accordance with the policies and priorities of each – mutually beneficial cooperative activities in the security field in areas to be identified by the two Parties.

ARTICLE 4

This agreement shall enter into force on the date of the later notification by either Party of the fulfilment of its requirement for entry into force of this agreement.

DONE at Jakarta on 6 February 2026 in duplicate in the English language and the Indonesian language, both texts being equally authentic. In case of any divergence of interpretation, the English text shall prevail.
