I firmly believe we should agree to American request for Australia to speak in support of the United States on Chinese Representation. I believe it would be most unwise to refuse. We have some ground to make up with the United States.

2 10 November. It informed Casey of a US request for Australia to speak on Chinese representation in the UN General Assembly; the Americans pointed out that in 1955 there had been 15 pro–Peking speeches and that, despite a satisfactory result, the United States had been isolated.

3 On 15 November, Casey spoke in support of a US draft moratorium resolution. The US resolution was subsequently adopted by the General Assembly.
