Close-Up: Celebrating 40 years of Australian aid

Australia has been providing assistance to developing countries for many decades but it was in 1974 that the government established a single body to manage the aid program.

While the size and shape of the aid program has changed over the years, Australia's commitment to promoting prosperity and reducing poverty has remained strong. Each decade has brought new insights and prompted new ways of delivering aid.

Australia's efforts have helped save millions of lives from natural disasters and conflicts, as well as deliver clean water, better health and education, employment and economic opportunities.

After 40 years Australian aid continues to evolve in order to reflect our values and to promote our ambition for peace and prosperity in our region.
