This document is an independent evaluation of support to the Pacific Regional Blindness Prevention Program (2009–2011).
This jointly commissioned (Australia and New Zealand) independent evaluation assesses the Pacific Regional Blindness Prevention Program (2009–2011) in Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste in terms of relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, sustainability and lessons learn.
Findings included:
- the program is meeting eye health priorities, particularly through the Pacific Eye Institute.
- training to mid-level eye health workers, and high graduate retention in eye health, are strong points.
- the program needs to systematically analyse gender based inequalities in eye care policy, service delivery and workforce development and adapt for better gender equity.
- specific measures are needed to increase rural outreach, integrate eye health in national health systems, and create prospects for sustainability.
