The agreement commenced operation on 1st January 1983 and has proved to be one of the most wide-ranging andsuccessful free trade agreements in the world.The documents, which cover the period from 1977 to 1983, examine the economic and trading situation that gave rise to the need for a new agreement to replace the existing one and then trace the course of the negotiations. This selection of 265 working papers, submissions, minutes, letters, telegrams and reports provides an absorbing account of the course of events. Included are a number of joint documents which were prepared at the end of important joint meetings to record matters agreed on and decisions reached.The volume is also the first joint historical publishing project undertaken by Australia and New Zealand.
