Jonathan Muir has served as Chief of Protocol at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade since September 2024, leading the Government’s administration of the diplomatic and consular corps in Australia.
From 2019 to 2023, he was Australia’s Ambassador to Qatar. In 2022, he also served as Australia’s Special Representative on Afghanistan. Earlier roles include Head of the People Smuggling and Human Trafficking Taskforce, Senior Media Adviser to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, and a posting to Indonesia from 2009 to 2013.
He holds a Master of International Affairs (Distinction) from the Australian National University and a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from the Queensland University of Technology.
He received the Australian Operational Service Medal (Civilian) in 2022 for his role in the Afghanistan non-combatant evacuation operation, and Qatar’s Al Wajbah Decoration in 2023 for services to the bilateral relationship.
