A major activity in the course of the year was the visit in October 2002 of a group of senior Indonesian media editors representing print, radio and television networks. Coming immediately after the tragic bombing in Bali, this visit contributed significantly to the reporting and understanding in Indonesia of Australias response to this event. In Indonesia, the AII supported an Indonesian communications company to provide assistance to Australian journalists travelling to Bali for the trial of the people alleged to be responsible for the October 12 bombings. The aim was to assist journalists to understand the complex Indonesian legal process and to find positive stories to help the Balinese overcome their present difficulties.
In March 2003, the Board travelled to Bali to hold one of its meetings in Denpasar. Bali holds a special place in the hearts of many Australians. The Board felt it was important to make a strong statement of support for the Balinese people as they work to overcome the difficulties they face as a result of the atrocity perpetrated in October 2002 and the negative effects of subsequent regional and international events. The Board met the Governor of Bali and the Chairman and members of the Regional House of Representatives, as well as local alumni of Australian universities, business and NGO representatives.
I am grateful for the continued support and advice we receive from other Government agencies. We maintain a very productive relationship with the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and the Department of Education Science and Training (DEST) in particular.
During the year it was a pleasure to welcome Ms Alison Carroll as a new member of the Board. Alison is a well-respected arts figure who has published extensively and brings great knowledge and expertise to the Board. I also wish to thank Ms Georgina Carnegie, Ms Karin Puels and Dr Colin Adam for their outstanding contribution to the Board and their friendship.
The Board appreciated the enthusiastic support and close involvement of Ambassador Ric Smith during his time in Jakarta and wishes him well in his important new assignment. I look forward to continuing our close co-operation with new Ambassador David Ritchie, also a former AII Board member. Finally, I note the valuable advice and administrative assistance that the Board has received from the Secretariat and the Cultural Counsellor in Jakarta.
