April 2011 update on the Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations (PACER) Plus negotiations

A meeting of PACER Plus trade officials was held in Palau on 14-15 March 2011. In addition to Pacific Islands Forum member countries' trade officials, participants in the meeting included representatives from the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Oceania Customs Organisation and Office of Chief Trade Adviser.

Participants in the meeting had further discussions on most of the priority negotiating issues previously agreed by Forum Trade Ministers, namely: rules of origin; customs procedures; sanitary and phytosanitary measures; technical regulations, standards and conformity assessment procedures; infrastructure (including shipping, aviation and telecommunications); and regional labour mobility.

Participants also received updates on the establishment of the Office of the Chief Trade Adviser and on national consultations on PACER Plus.

The PACER Plus negotiations will be considered at the 2011 Pacific Islands Forum Trade Ministers' meeting, which will be held in Tonga on 18 and 19 May.
