How Australia is making a difference
Australia puts gender at the front of its engagement with Vietnam
Gender equality and women's empowerment is a priority of Australia's foreign policy. One of the ten performance targets for Australia's aid program is to ensure that more than 80 per cent of investments, regardless of their objectives, will effectively address gender issues in their implementation. The Australian Government in Vietnam has committed to ensuring that this amount is one hundred percent and has included gender as one of the three pillars in their aid investment plan with Vietnam for 2015-20.
In November 2016, Australia in Vietnam launched its first ever Gender Equality Strategy for 2016-20. The Strategy focuses on three key areas to progressively close the gender gap in Vietnam:
- Enhancing women's voices in decision-making and leadership
- Promoting women's economic empowerment
- Ending Violence against women and girls
Gender equality is central to economic and human development and a fundamental right. Promoting the roles of women in every aspect of public and private life will lead to a safer, more prosperous and fairer Vietnam, region and Australia.
