Australian Comprehensive Test Ban Office
The Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (ASNO) co-ordinates Australia's preparations for entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). The focus of this work is establishment of 20 monitoring stations and one laboratory as part of the CTBT's International Monitoring System (IMS). These will form part of a network of 337 IMS facilities which will monitor the globe for any evidence of explosive nuclear testing.
Status of Australian IMS facilities
Work establishing and operating Australia's IMS stations carried out by specialist technical agencies and institutions:
- Geoscience Australia
- Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University
- Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency
Establishment of the IMS internationally is the responsibility of the Preparatory Commission for the CTBT Organization.
