Mr Bruer is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), and was most recently Assistant Secretary, Papua New Guinea and Fiji Branch, a position he has held since November 2009.
From 2005 until 2009, he was Australian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Mr Bruer has also served overseas as Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy, Saudi Arabia and Second Secretary at the Australian High Commission, Papua New Guinea. He has undertaken short-term missions as Acting High Commissioner to Nauru and Deputy High Commissioner to the Solomon Islands.
Mr Bruer holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Adelaide, and a Master of Arts in Public Policy from the University of Melbourne.
