El Niño: Australian deployments

Two Australian Civilian Corps specialists were deployed to PNG in response to El Niño. This was in addition to the six pre-positioned specialists in National Disaster Management Offices in Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa and Timor-Leste who supported local governments to prepare for the 2015-16 Pacific Cyclone season and respond to El Niño impacts. This assistance was complemented by Australia's recent disaster preparedness investment in the Climate Risk Early Warning System initiative.

The Australian Government also supported the deployment of 17 RedR specialists to 10 countries affected by El Niño, including PNG and Ethiopia. The deployments were to UNICEF, the World Food Programme, the International Organization for Migration and the World Health Organization.
