The Office of Development Effectiveness
Independent Evaluation Committee
The Independent Evaluation Committee (IEC) is an external, advisory body that oversees ODE's work. Its objective is to strengthen the quality, credibility and independence of ODE's work program, which includes:
- program and strategic evaluations
- performance and quality analysis, and
- independent analysis of the department's assessments contained in the annual Performance of Australian Aid report.
Established in 2012, the IEC provides independent advice on ODE's strategic direction and recommendations relating to DFAT's performance management policies. It reviews and endorses all ODE products, supporting ODE to produce sound, relevant and influential evaluations and reports.
The IEC is comprised of three independent members, including the Chair, along with a DFAT Deputy Secretary. Together they contribute extensive development expertise, evaluation knowledge and high-level public and private sector experience. External members are appointed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs. The Committee meets three or four times a year as required.
