Take advantage of Australia’s Free Trade Agreements

With 14 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) in force, covering just over 70 per cent of Australia’s two-way trade, and the Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations (PACER) Plus coming into force on 13 December 2020, there are even more reasons for Australian businesses to consider the opportunities in our FTA markets.

Austrade and DFAT are committed to supporting Australian businesses, in an increasingly digital global economy, to understand the benefits of Free Trade Agreements. On 2 November 2020, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment launched the Free Trade Advantage, an online platform that brings together practical advice and resources to help businesses to understand Australia’s Free Trade Agreements and how to access these.

The platform was launched in a webcast, concluding a 12-part series that explored current market insights, opportunities and challenges facing Australian exporters with key industry experts and case study speakers sharing first-hand experiences and practical advice.

Participants heard from Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Senator, the Hon Simon Birmingham; Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Frances Adamson; Acting CEO Austrade, Tim Beresford; April Palmerlee, CEO, American Chamber of Commerce in Australia; Alan Oppenheim, Managing Director, Ego Pharmaceuticals and Mike Tristram, CEO, Trisco Foods Pty Ltd. The series concluded with a focus on Australia – US trade relations including celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA) and an exploration of the benefits and achievements of Australia’s other FTAs. The panel shared their insights into the ease of Australians doing business in the US – including market entry, strong regulatory framework (particularly for intellectual property protection), culture and language and encouraged business to “back themselves,” when looking to expand into the US market.

The Free Trade Advantage digital platform is designed to help new and experienced exporters to navigate the FTA process.
