The G20

Outreach

Australia considers outreach to be a central element of its responsibilities as G20 host and is committed to consultation to ensure that non-member views are also considered by the G20. A focus for Australia is clearly explaining the G20's work, its link to growth in the global economy and employment, and listening to views on the Group's agenda. Australian ministers and senior officials conduct regular outreach with the formal G20 non-government engagement groups and with counterparts in our region and beyond.

Ahead of the commencement of Australia’s G20 presidency, Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop took advantage of her attendance at the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers meeting in Sri Lanka in November 2013 to outline Australia's objectives and to listen to views. Since then, the Prime Minister and Treasurer have also spoken on Australia's objectives at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2014, at the Institute of International Finance , the first G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Sydney in February 2014 and in Washington at the Reinventing Bretton Woods Committee Conference in April.  Australia’s Sherpa also delivered a speech in Singapore on 20 May, titled “Australia's G20 Presidency: Building International Economic Leadership” and provided an address to the Institute for Global Dialogue G20 Outreach Seminar in South Africa on 24 July titled “The G20 and the Future of Global Economic Growth”.

On 20 June, 2014 Minister Bishop delivered the keynote address to the C20 Summit (civil society formal non-government G20 engagement group) in Melbourne . In her speech Minister Bishop underlined that the G20’s development agenda, including its focus on infrastructure, taxation, financial inclusion and remittances will help the poor and the vulnerable and contribute to global growth. Further information about the G20’s work on development can be found on the DFAT G20 development webpage. Prime Minister Abbott met with the C20 Steering Committee on 22 June where he was presented with the communique from the C20 Summit. The Prime Minister’s Statement can be found here . More speeches on the G20.

Australia's role in G20 outreach with international organisations is longstanding. For example, at the 2011 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth, Australia promoted the establishment of an annual officials-level Commonwealth meeting on the G20 development agenda to help further Commonwealth discussion on G20 issues. The first meeting took place in Washington in April 2012 and has now been expanded to include the International Organisation for Francophone Countries (OIF). The third annual meeting took place on 7 April 2014. A read-out of the April meeting can be found here.

The Australian Government has also appointed Daniel Sloper, G20 Special Representative , to support Australia's G20 sherpa and conduct outreach on the G20's 2014 agenda. As part of his work, the Special Representative has embarked on a series of visits to G20 and non-G20 countries to meet officials, international and regional organisations, other stakeholders and the media.

The Special Representative has visited more than ten different countries and met with more than 50 delegations including a wide range of government officials and representatives from international and regional organisations - including at CHOGM (in Sri Lanka), the Asia Europe Meeting (in New Delhi), and has participated in panels at the the IMF’s Africa Rising Conference (in Mozambique) and the OECD (France).  He travelled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in June 2014 where with South African officials he discussed the G20 agenda with the African Union Permanent Representatives Committee and separately met with the United Nations Commission for Africa. The Special Representative and other Australian G20 officials are also endeavouring to keep embassies and high commissions accredited to Australia based in Canberra informed of the G20's work and of the outcomes of meetings throughout the year. Officials provide regular briefings to the diplomatic community as a whole and meet with interested diplomats on specific issues as required, for example, the Special Representative recently held a G20 roundtable for representatives of Pacific Island Missions located in Canberra. Read a summary of the July 3 briefing.

Meeting with representatives of the G20 non-government engagement groups, as part of broad engagement with the Australian presidency, is also part of the Special Representative's work. More information on how the Australian G20 presidency is working closely with the non-government engagement groups can be found on the official G20 websiteand the transcript of the G20 Engagement roundtable in Canberra.

Australia's network of overseas missions also play an important role in G20 outreach. Australia has missions in all G20 countries and almost all of the invited guest countries.   In the lead-up to the commencement of Australia's presidency on 1 December 2013 and thereafter to date, Australia's overseas missions have organised and participated in events and activities to highlight Australia's G20 priorities and deepen understanding of the purpose and objectives of the G20.

A snapshot of Australia's international outreach activities, including those undertaken by Australia's Sherpa, the Special Representative and overseas missions appears below.
