Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI)

The Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI) has been established jointly by Australia and Japan in 2010 to facilitate implementation of the consensus outcomes of the May 2010 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference. NPDI members include Australia, Canada, Chile, Germany, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

The NPDI's work has been focused on: the negotiation of a Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty (FMCT); stronger international nuclear safeguards, including through the universal adoption of the Additional Protocol to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards agreements; increased transparency in nuclear disarmament reporting; support for nuclear weapon-free zones, including a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East; and entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.
