Graduate Trainees

What about my salary?

Salary

Graduate Trainees begin work at the APS 3.2 level. The starting salary for the 2010 intake has not been finalised as the department’s Collective Agreement (CA), which sets employee salaries and other terms and conditions of employment, is due to expire in early July 2009. The starting salary for graduates who commenced work in 2009 intake was $52,545. Under the current CA, Trainees are also entitled to 22 days annual leave, sick leave and long-service leave provisions, and superannuation benefits. Provided they perform at a satisfactory level, Trainees are advanced to a higher salary level 12 months after starting work. Full details of the department's salaries and conditions of service can be found in our Collective Agreement.

Advancement in the department is on the basis of annual performance reviews and formal promotion processes.

Conduct and Ethics

Working in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade requires the highest standards of conduct in Australia and overseas.  Ethical conduct by employees contributes significantly to efficiency and effectiveness in the workplace and to the standing of the department and its employees in Australia and internationally.  In implementing the Certified Agreement and undertaking their duties, employees are required to uphold the Australian Public Service (APS) Values and comply with the APS Code of Conduct as enshrined in the Public Service Act 1999.  Employees also need to comply with the department's Code of Conduct for Overseas Service, which takes account of the particular significance of the department's representational role outside Australia.
