Corporate and Financial Management Trainees
The job: A career in corporate and financial management
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) operates in a very demanding international environment, across a network of more than 85 overseas posts. Essential to our work is the sound, innovative management of our operations and the provision of consular assistance to Australian citizens abroad.
Our Corporate and Financial Management Trainees can expect a diverse and challenging career. Trainees are chosen on the basis of their flexibility and lateral thinking, in addition to core skills in financial management. Following a broad training program, they will be equipped to perform a wide variety of corporate services work in Australia and overseas.
In Australia, this work could include: assessing budgets; managing the department’s large portfolio of owned and leased property; manning phones in our consular crisis centre during emergencies; and providing advice to our overseas posts on a range of topics, including managing budgets and staff, conditions of service for locally engaged staff and contract issues.
When posted overseas, many of our corporate officers have special responsibility for providing consular assistance to Australians living or travelling abroad. This can be very demanding work, particularly when dealing with accidents and medical emergencies. Our corporate officers are also responsible for managing local staff, budgets and embassy property, requiring excellent negotiation and management skills.
