Investing in Latin American Growth: Unlocking Opportunities in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Chile
August 2001
Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Chile are world leaders in attracting emerging market foreign direct investment; in 1999, they received 38 per cent of world inflows to these markets. To date, Australia is a relatively minor investor in these major Latin American markets, but great potential exists due to their international competitiveness in mining and agribusiness, their relatively attractive investment environments, and the market opportunities regional integration provides.
This report aims to help Australian business unlock trade and investment opportunities in Latin America. It comprehensively analyses the economic prospects of Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Chile, investigates potential trade and investment opportunities, and compares their business environments. It also highlights the implications for Australia of rapidly deepening regional integration, and compares the scale and opportunities in these economies with major Asian markets.
