351 Eaton to Department of External Affairs

Cablegram 328 BATAVIA, 25 September 1947

Our 327 [1] para 3.

Mission saw Van Mook this morning after which Schuurman informed me no decision would be given on representation to Djocjakarta and Republican representative proceeding to Canberra until Saturday earliest.

Have pressed as far as possible for decisions and no opportunity discuss matter personally with Van Mook until after my return from Djocjakarta. [2]

Also informed by Schuurman that appointment of American Representative on Committee of Three not yet definite and N.E.I.

authorities consider information concerning their aims etc. should be given to 3 representatives together direct by The Hague.

Am of opinion Dutch will use delaying tactics and after-wards press for quick decision as with consular mission.

1 Dispatched on 24 September, it reported, inter alia, that Eaton was continuing to press the Dutch authorities in Batavia for decisions regarding Australian representation at Djokjakarta and for visits by Dutch and Indonesian representatives to Australia.

2 Members of the Consular Commission including Eaton visited Djokjakarta on 26-27 September. A record of the Commission's formal discussions with Sjarifuddin on 26 September is given in United Nations, Security Council Official Records, Second Year, Special Supplement No.4, pp.71-89.
