I acknowledge and thank you for the numerous telegrams of the last few days on the European position. [1] We are entirely behind you in the action you are taking in an endeavour to stop further deterioration of the situation.

1 On 15 March German troops occupied Prague and in the succeeding days Germany annexed Bohemia and Moravia, Slovakia declared its independence and placed itself under German protection and Hungary annexed Ruthenia. See also Document 46, note 2.
