Victoria State Director, Mr John Richardson
John Richardson was appointed Director of the Victoria State Office of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in January 2013. He was previously Australia's Ambassador to Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay from 2008 to 2011 and spent 2012 as the Assistant Secretary of the Canada and Latin America Branch, with responsibility for the development of Australia's bilateral relationships in Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada.
Prior to going to Argentina, Mr Richardson was Assistant Secretary of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation taskforce in DFAT in 2006 and 2007 which was responsible for the development and coordination of Australian policy to APEC in Australia's host year of 2007. This was his second stint in APEC after working in the original development of the group from 1988 to 1992.
A strong focus on Asia and Australia's economic relationship with the region has been a key feature from the start of Mr Richardson's career, following studies at the Australian National University to obtain an honours degree in economics with majors in economics, Japanese and politics. Professional associations with the region have included working in Japan, a posting in Thailand as Deputy Head of Mission in 1993 and 1994 and responsibility for relations with north-east Asia from 1995 to 1998.
Mr Richardson was also posted in Germany from 1998 to 2001 and was responsible for the department's security domestically and overseas from late 2001 to 2005.
