Goods exports rise despite challenges

Despite slow world growth and the drought in Australia, the volume of Australia’s merchandise exports rose one per cent last year.

Publications released by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade today highlight the highs and lows experienced by Australia’s exporters during 2002.

Composition of Trade, Australia 2002 reveals that while the value of Australia’s exports of goods and services declined by two per cent, there were a number of high performing export items and markets.  Wine exports were up 21 per cent to $2.3 billion and motor vehicle parts rose 18 per cent to $1.1 billion.  Exports rose in three of Australia’s top five markets –Korea, China and New Zealand - as did exports to the United Kingdom.

Exports of Primary and Manufactured Products, Australia 2002 shows exports of manufactured goods made up 28 per cent of all merchandise exports last year.  In particular, exports of sophisticated Elaborately Transformed Manufactures (ETMs) such as scientific apparatus, civil engineering and electronic equipment, and motor vehicles and parts, grew in key markets China and Korea by 18 per cent and 8 per cent respectively.

Composition of Trade (priced at $48) provides a comprehensive analysis of the growth, direction and commodity breakdown of Australia's merchandise exports in recent years, as well as overall details of services trade over a five year period.

Exports of Primary and Manufactured Products (priced at $35) focuses on the level of processing of export commodities, providing a 10-year analysis.
