State exports rose strongly in 2007-08
Western Australia was again the nation’s leading exporter in 2007-08, accounting for almost one third of all Australia exports, according to DFAT’s annual analysis of trade by each of the states and territories.
All States and Territories except Tasmania recorded increases in exports compared with the previous year. South Australia, Victoria and the ACT recorded annual growth rates in 2007-08 which were above their five-year average growth.
The figures are contained in Australia’s Trade by State and Territory 2007-08,which provides a complete statistical guide to exports and imports of goods and services for every State and Territory on a financial year basis. It is available free on the DFAT website at http://www.dfat.gov.au/trade
Total exports for Australia were $232.1 billion (up 8.3 per cent from 2006-07) consisting of:
- Western Australia $73.6 billion (up 13.8 per cent)
- NSW $50.7 billion (up 7.9 per cent)
- Queensland $44.1 billion (up 1.5 per cent)
- Victoria $33.5 billion (up 7.1 per cent)
- South Australia $12.3 billion (up 13.4 per cent)
- Northern Territory $ 5.3 billion (up 11.6 per cent)
- Tasmania $ 4.1 billion (down 1.1 per cent)
- Australian Capital Territory $ 1.0 billion (up 7.2 per cent)
NSW was by far the nation’s largest exporter of services with a share of 40.2 per cent ($20.6 billion), followed by Victoria 25.3 per cent ($13 billion), Queensland 17.1 per cent ($8.8 billion) and Western Australia 9.5 per cent ($4.9 billion). Travel services were the major component of services exports.
