What were you doing before you joined DFAT?

Before joining DFAT I worked with an international contract management company at the University of Queensland. My main project was the AusAID-funded Samoa Police Project, which aimed to build the capacity of the Police Service. Prior to that I was an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development in Sri Lanka, where I worked with a local non-governmental organisation that sought to rebuild the lives of tsunami-affected villagers in the South.

In 2003 I graduated with a Bachelor of International Business with Honours. I am currently completing a Masters in International and Community Development.

Why did you apply to DFAT?

I applied to DFAT because of my strong interest in international affairs and government policy. I also love travelling and experiencing different cultures.

Do you speak any languages?

I studied Japanese at school and university, but I am out of practice these days. I also speak some Sinhala from my time spent in Sri Lanka.

What was the most challenging aspect of the recruitment/selection process?

The entire selection process lasts for about nine months. This in itself was challenging for me personally because I wanted to wait until I passed the final stage of the recruitment process before advising my employer and colleagues. Many find the security interview confronting.

Do you have any tips for applicants on how to approach the selection process?

Be confident in your abilities. If you have any friends who are working at DFAT, seek their advice. In the group interview, remember that your fellow applicants are also potential colleagues. Help to facilitate the group work and give each team member the opportunity to speak. Finally, I first applied for DFAT in 2003, but wasn't selected at the time, so for those whose applications are rejected - don't give up!

Why would you recommend DFAT as a career?

I would recommend a career with DFAT because every day is in itself unique, and is often fast-paced and challenging. It's a great opportunity to contribute to policy development, travel the world, and gain access to interesting and influential people.
