Where did you live and what were you doing before joining DFAT?

I previously lived in Sydney and was studying a double degree in law and international studies at the University of Sydney.

Why did you apply to DFAT?

I wanted to experience working in a government department with a focus on international relations.

What was the most challenging aspect of the recruitment/selection process?

The most challenging aspect of the selection process was the panel interview. The process was nerve-racking but in the end the interviewers made me feel comfortable and competent.

Do you have any tips for applicants on how to approach the application process?

My advice is to relax and be yourself, especially in the interview. Be honest and real about your expectations of yourself and the Department. Remember that the Department wants to know all about you, so don't be shy in giving credit where credit is due.

Has the reality of working in DFAT differed from your perceptions of what it was going to be like?

The reality is that DFAT is a whole lot bigger than what I expected. There are so many different sections to work in that the possibilities seem endless.

What have been the highlights of your career in the Department?

Highlights so far have been being given the responsibility and respect of those I work with as well as gaining a greater understanding and appreciation of exactly what the Department does.

Why would you recommend DFAT as a career?

I would recommend a career with DFAT because of the diversity and dynamics the Department brings to your work. There is always something going on and the chance at an international or domestic posting is very attractive.

How do you enjoy living in Canberra?

Living in Canberra is not what many expect. There are a lot of cool bars and restaurants in Canberra which are perfect to go to after work to unwind.

Do you have any other insights for potential applicants?

There are so many different areas of the Department where you can work. The diversity is amazing, so even if you are unsure if DFAT is for you, try it out, because there's somewhere that will be the perfect fit.
