Australia's pledge

This graph illustrates the emissions reduction task associated with reducing Australia emissions by five per cent of 2000 levels in 2020. The graph shows the level business-as-usual emissions is projected to be 17 per cent above 2000 levels in 2020. To achieve Australia's 2020 target, Australia must reduce its emissions by 431 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2-e) by 2020, taking into account carryover surplus Kyoto units. The minus five per cent target equates to an abatement task of 131 Mt CO2-e in 2020.

Abatement task is measured in million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2-e). Source: Department of the Environment (2014); Australia's Abatement Task and 2013 Emissions Projections, p.3
