NAIDOC Week 2010 with William Barton
On 7 July 2010, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in Canberra presented acclaimed musician and composer William Barton as part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations for the diplomatic corps and guests.
Fresh from a successful tour in China, William was accompanied by his mother Dalmae Barton and students from the Australian National University's School of Music, Hayley Bullock and Ellyane DeFontanay on violin, Xina Hawkins on viola and James Larsen on cello.
Hosted by Deputy Secretary Gillian Bird and opened by Ngambri-Ngunnawal Elder Matilda House, the event was co-sponsored by the Australian Public Service Commission.
The Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts, the Hon Peter Garrett AM MP, was a guest of honour at the event. The Minister spoke about the Breakthrough Indigenous contemporary music pilot initiative which aims to increase opportunities for Indigenous musicians.
The event is part of the Department's Indigenous cultural diplomacy program which aims to develop projects and initiatives that highlight to international audiences the important contributions of Australia's Indigenous peoples to Australia in the arts, business and government.
Embassies overseas also celebrated NAIDOC week, by promoting the achievements, art and culture of Indigenous Australians through a range of activities, including screening Australian Indigenous films, exhibiting Indigenous works of art and hosting events such as book launches, live music performances, lectures and photographic exhibitions.
