Listen Up - Music of Black Australia

A compilation of music by Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People

Australia's Indigenous singers and musicians have a global audience courtesy of a CD commissioned by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Listen Up: Music of Black Australia features a selection of Indigenous singers and musicians and is being used by Australia's overseas diplomatic missions to promote the diversity and depth of talent that exists in Indigenous Australia and features songs and musicians from the Northern Territory, Western Australia, South Australia and the Torres Strait Islands.

CD: Music of Black AustraliaThe CD was produced by the Darwin independent recording company, Skinnyfish Music, which specialises in recording, promoting and distributing contemporary and traditional Indigenous music.Seaman Dan

The CD also showcases performers such as the Stiff Gins, Nabarlek, the Saltwater Band and Letterstick, and artists Kerrianne Cox, Rita Mills and Frank Yamma.

The CD is the initiative of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Program in DFAT's Images of Australia branch. The ATSI Program aims to project a positive and accurate image internationally of Australia's Indigenous peoples and to promote and encourage greater awareness, appreciation and knowledge of Australia's Indigenous peoples and cultures.

The artists on the compilation represent a broad cross section Of musical styles, and have been included to highlight the incredible depth of talent in the Indigenous community of Australia.

The project has come about through the efforts of Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, particularly through the effort of the Images of Australia Branch and Skinnyfish Music.
