International Counter-Terrorism
Bali Counter-Terrorism Process
In February 2004, Australia and Indonesia co-chaired the Bali Regional Ministerial Meeting on Counter-Terrorism. This meeting and follow-up activities under the auspices of the two working groups it established - the Legal Issues Working Group and the Ad Hoc Working Group of Law Enforcement Practitioners - have become known as the Bali Counter-Terrorism Process. On 29 June 2006, Australia and Indonesia issued a Co-Chairs' Report on the achievements of the Bali Counter-Terrorism Process.
The two Working Groups of the Bali Counter-Terrorism Process identified the key challenges facing national and international counter-terrorism efforts and developed a number of practical strategies for addressing them. The meetings also helped strengthen the sense of shared purpose, cooperation and understanding between counter-terrorism practitioners from the wide range of participating governments and organisations.
To capitalise on the momentum achieved through the Bali Counter-Terrorism Process, the report encouraged all participating countries to consider further practical activities that might be undertaken, on a regional or sub-regional basis, to progress this valuable work.
