Established: The Conference on Human Environment in the South Pacific, Rarotonga in March 1982 agreed to establish SPREP as a separate entity within the Pacific Community (SPC). Since 1991 SPREP has functioned as an autonomous regional organisation. The formal Agreement Establishing SPREP was signed in Apia in June 1993 and entered into force on 31 August 1995.

Aims: SPREP’s mandate is to promote cooperation in and to provide assistance to the Pacific islands region to protect and improve the environment and to ensure sustainable development for present and future generations.  Its vision is that people of the Pacific islands are better able to plan, protect, manage and use their environment for sustainable development.

Australian contribution: Australia provided core funding of A$1,600,000 in 2011.

Members: there are 25 members: American Samoa, Australia , Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, France, French Polynesia, Guam, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Northern Marianas Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau,  Tonga, Tuvalu, USA, Vanuatu, Wallis & Futuna.
