A
Celebration of Trans-Tasman Relations
20 Years of Closer Economic Relations
between Australia and New Zealand
Cultural Heritage: Shared but Distinct
The largest ethnic group (more than 70%) in both Australia and New Zealand is of Anglo-Celtic origin, though with less historical migration from Ireland to New Zealand. Maori (14.5%) and Pacific Islanders (5.6%) account for much of the balance of New Zealands population. Asia is the largest source of recent migrants to New Zealand.

Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders together account for about 1.1% of Australias population. Australias overall ethnic mix is somewhat more diverse than New Zealands, with more significant percentages nominating Northwest Europe (7.0%), Southern Europe (6.8%), Eastern Europe (4%), Asia (6.3%) and the Middle East (2.0%).

Trans-Tasman Movement of People
Under the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement Australians and New Zealanders are free to visit, live in and work each others countries.
More than 450,000 New Zealanders reside in Australia. About 50,000 Australians reside in New Zealand.
New Zealand (see below) has been the largest source of recent long term settlers to Australia.
