Inaugural Crawford-Nishi Lecture on Australia-Japan Relations
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Stephen Smith, delivered the inaugural Crawford-Nishi lecture on Australia-Japan relations in Canberra on 18 March 2009. He described an ambitious vision for the future of Australia’s comprehensive partnership with Japan which is underpinned by shared values, intersecting interests and common approaches to international security challenges.
The Crawford-Nishi Lecture Series commemorates the pioneering efforts by Sir John Crawford, Secretary of the Department of Trade, and Japan’s first Ambassador to Australia, His Excellency, Mr Haruhiko Nishi, to encourage the development of Australia-Japan trade. The lecture series is an initiative of the Australia-Japan Research Centre at the Crawford School of Economics and Government in The Australian National University, with the support of the Australia-Japan Foundation. The Lecture Series is expected to become an annual event.
