Australia-China Free Trade Agreement negotiations

Subscriber update: Eighteenth round of negotiations

March 2012

The 18th round of negotiations on the Australia-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was held in Canberra on 19-21 March 2012.

On market access for goods, both sides continued discussions from the last round on respective priorities and sensitivities and tabled new proposals. We made progress on the text of chapters on trade in goods, sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) issues, customs procedures, rules of origin and technical barriers to trade (TBT), with some chapters nearing finalisation.

We reached agreement on some elements of services and investment chapter text. In services market access discussions, each side identified priorities and explained further how its regulatory and administrative systems functioned. Progress continued to be made on legal and other issues, including dispute settlement.

We would be pleased to receive any updated submissions from industry or interested stakeholders.
